The European Union Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, on Thursday called for the removal of roaming charges while using within the Union, said news agency STT quoting AFP.
Operators charge roaming fees when the phone or mobile device is used outside the home.
Such fees have already been cut significantly within the EU, but the European Commissioner Neelie Kroes said that it is necessary to charge for the EU's economic growth.
The measures, if agreed, would be implemented by 2015 or 2016.
Kroes said that if the target is met, phone calls, text messages and data transfer cost the same at home and elsewhere in the EU. It would also generate fierce competition between operators.
