A total of 79,196 new motor vehicles were registered in the country in the first five months of this year and the number was 19.4 per cent lower compared to the stipulated period of the previous year, said Statistics Finland.
The report released on Thursday said that the number of passenger cars first registered in the January to May period was 47,727, which is also 19.4 per cent down from similar period of the year before.
The report, however, said that a total of 19,314 new motor vehicles were registered in the country in last month this year and the number is 8.2 per cent higher than the corresponding month of the previous year.
In May the number of new passenger cars registered was 10,228, which was 39.8 per cent up compared to the same period of the year before.
The increase of new registered cars was due to automobile taxes which changed in April 2012. The number of passenger cars first registered in May has been on average approximately 13,000 during the 2000s.
These data are based on the Vehicular and Driver Data Register of the Finnish Transport Safety Agency and they have been produced by Statistics Finland. The numbers are exclusive of the vehicles on the Åland Islands
The most common passenger car makes first registered in the January to May period were Volkswagen, Toyota and Ford.
