Retail trade sales grew by 0.5 per cent in August this year compared to August 2012, according to the Statistics Finland.
 
In daily consumer goods trade, sales grew by 2.3 per cent, while sales in department store trade contracted by 0.3 per cent during the period.
 
Wholesale trade sales, on the other hand, went down by 2.6 per cent, but motor vehicle sales went up by 1.0 per cent from the previous year.
 
‘In total trade, sales decreased in August by 1.3 per cent from the corresponding period of the previous year,’ said a press release on Sunday.
 
In August, the sales volume in retail trade contracted by 0.3 per cent and in wholesale trade by 2.2 per cent from one year back.
 
The volume index of sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the value index series, said the release.
 
Sales in trade industries fell in January-August period with exception of retail trade.
 
In the January to August period, retail trade sales grew by 0.7 per cent compared with the corresponding period of the previous year. In contrast, wholesale trade sales went down by 2.5 per cent and motor vehicle sales by 21.5 per cent over the corresponding period.
 
In total trade, sales were down in January to August by 4.1 per cent from the respective period of the year before.
