Finance Minister Jutta Urpilainen on Monday said the insurance companies that deal with pension and insurance schemes should be brought under intensive monitoring.

Pointing out the alleged irregularities in Keva (Kuntien eläkevakuutus), the scheme that handles pension of local government employees, the minister said the monitoring system in the employee benefit scheme was not sufficient at this moment.

A controversy was recently created regarding the benefit of Keva Executive Director Merja Ailuksen, as the tax value on her housing company was set too low.

The Keva boss was also criticised for the EUR 250,000 renovation works that was commissioned on her company housing.

Urpilainen, also chief of the Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (The Social Democratic Party) – the second biggest component of the six-party alliance government, said there was lack of fairness and transparency regarding the benefits of managers of insurance pension companies.

Taking personal advantages from a public position tarnishes the image and public confidence, said the finance minister, adding that she and her party wants to ensure transparency.

She also demanded that shares purchased by the company managers and their spouses should be made public.
