As many as 14,500 people lost their jobs in different sectors during the year 2013, according to social organisation SAK, which deals with the labour market organisations.

Terming the number as high, SAK said the figure was still on the upper end and similar to the year 2012 when 15,800 people lost their jobs.

The SAK statistics also said the figures were still lower than that of 2009, when the highest 20,000 people faced the axe.

Most of the employees dismissed last year were from the technology sector and private service industries.

Matti Tukiainen, a senior official in charge of economic development affairs of SAK, expressed fears that jobs were going to be lost this year as well, with the retail and other service industries especially posing a big threat to the industries.

Co-determination between employers and employees negotiated on the situation of about 120,000 employees during last year.
