The Lapland Ely Centre (Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment) on Wednesday issued a temporary preservation order barring Canadian company Mawson from carrying out gold exploration at Natura in Ylitornio.

The company has already got permission from the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) for mining in the area. Now, however, it will not be able to continue exploration activities until the dispute is resolved at the labour court.

The mining company termed the order as an example of strict attitude towards exploration in protected areas.

Tapani Hyysalo, operations director of Mawson Oy, said the Ely Centre exceeded its mandate by imposing a very rare preservation order.

The Ely Centre, however, said conditions become stricter, although the Tukes had claimed that the authorities had tightened grip in this regard.

In November 2011, Mawson Resources Limited got permission from the Tukes to explore a 10,580 hectare area at the Rompas gold project in northern Finland for three years.
