National flag carrier Finnair has planned to outsource 540 workers. In addition, Finnair is also gearing towards co-determination talks targeted at cutting manpower.

The talks are aimed at reducing 140 personnel in the administration and support operations.

In total, the operation is set to touch on 680 employees. Moreover, Finnair said that it was considering further actions later in the year.

“The loss-making Finnair, whose economic situation is weak, can wait no longer. The situation calls for urgent action to restore profitability,” explained CEO Pekka Vauramo.

Cabin crew outsourcing will initially begin on three long distance routes. The next phase will be to outsource personnel in more than 10 routes.

Finnair is also looking at the possibility of setting up a subsidiary that will cater to cabin crew demands.

Vauramo said Finnair hoped that the planned negotiations would help to achieve results so that the company could continue with its own employees.
