The number of refuelling service stations continued to decline in 2013, said the Finnish Petroleum Association.

According to the association’s statistics, the number of service and automated stations in the country dropped by 15 over the year.

The number of traditional service stations declined by 40 while that of the automated stations increased by 25.

The total number of stations stood at 1,061 at the end of last year while the turnover of the automated stations accounted for nearly 60 percent of the total sales.

Pekka Huttula, Deputy Managing Director of Finnish Petroleum Federation said traditionally Finland has had plenty of gas stations in relation to the numbers of residents, cars and traffic volume.

Huttula, however, said the number of service stations is adaptable to changes over time. This, he said, is because of cars becoming more energy-efficient leading to a reduction in fuel consumption.
