Minister of Economic Affairs Jan Vapaavuori has left for South Korea to speed up a deal that will make it possible to purchase STX Finland’s Turku shipyard.

The minister is expected to meet STX senior executives next week.

This week it was reported that the state together with Meyer Werft, one of the largest German shipyards are planning to buy the Turku shipyard.

The shipyard is reported to have been struggling for a long time.

Vapaavuori said he hopes that the matter would proceed as quickly as possible in South Korea, even though the negotiations are still in the initial stage.

Earlier, the minister expressed his belief that the state can trust the German company assessment of the shipyard industry’s profitability in Finland.

It is also unclear whether STX wants to sell the Turku and French shipyards all together or separately.

Meyer Weft has also indicated that it still needs more information on the situation of Turku shipyard before making a decision.
