Wed, 28 May, 2014 12:02:55 AM FTimes-STT Report, May 28 File Photo – Str / Lehtikuva. Postal and logistics corporation Itella terminated 55 truck drivers on Tuesday. In addition, 26 drivers were offered a similar job in other towns.
"Our profitability has been on a weak level," said Timo Kinnunen, the Itella's director of domestic carriage.
Kinnunen added that the changes will improve efficiency and consequently lead to profitability.
Itella during the beginning of the co-determination talks estimated that it needed to lay off 85 drivers. The negotiations touched on 400 permanent employees.
The corporation in March decided to reduce its workforce by nearly 500 after the conclusion of the co-determination talks. Later the company informed that the figure had fallen to just over 400.
The decision by Itella to cut its staff led to strike by part of its workers who are members of the Transport Workers Union (ATK).
The workers had failed to report to work on Tuesday and Itella warned that the strike could lead in transportation delays in different locations.
