Driven by higher confidence among consumers as well as industry and construction managers, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) rose in the euro area in May, the European Union (EU) announced Wednesday.

In the single currency area, the ESI by 0.7 point to 102.7 in May, following its almost tantamount decrease last month, an EU statement said.

Confidence in services and retail trade remained broadly unchanged compared to April.

The EU said amongst the five largest euro area economies, the ESI increased in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Spain, and slightly declined in France.

In the wider EU, the headline indicator remained broadly stable, increasing by 0.2 point to 106.5 in May.
