Mobile phone manufacturer Nokia paid millions of euros to blackmailers at the end of 2007 after they had threatened to reveal an integral part of the source code used in phone's operating system, reported MTV news.

Detective superintendent Tero Haapala from the National Bureau of Investigation confirmed to the news agency STT that the matter is investigated as aggravated extortion and that Nokia is the aggrieved party.

According to Haapala, the case is still unresolved. Haapala, however, declined to comment further on the matter but confirmed that the amount paid was considerable.

Nokia was not available for comment.

According to MTV, the issue surrounds the Symbian encryption key used for signing which is a few kilobytes in size. Had the encryption key gone to other hands, it would have been possible to use applications which are not approved by Nokia.

The blackmail saga according to MTV, was known to just a small ring. It is not known how the code was leaked.

The ransom money was delivered at an amusement park in Tampere.
