The majority of people in the country consider 65 years as the appropriate age for retirement, according to a survey commissioned by YLE.

About 60 per cent of the survey respondents felt the ideal age for retirement should be between 63 and 65 years.

Twenty-five per cent of them showed preference for a lower age of retirement while only less than 10 per cent were in favour of retiring after the age of 65 years.

Late retirement was welcomed by experts, entrepreneurs and academics while people who do physically demanding jobs were in favour of early retirement, said the survey report.

Political ideology of a person also influences his opinion in this regard.

Supporters of the ruling Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) and the Vihreä Liitto (Green League) showed inclination towards a high retirement age while the opposition Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) supporters leaned towards early retirement.

The survey was conducted through interviews with about 1,000 Finns between the age of 15 and 79.
