The national railway operator VR’s electricians will go for a three-week lockout beginning on Thursday to press home their demand for a separate contract law.

The VR electricians decided for the lockout programme under the umbrella of Finnish Electrical Workers' Union. Currently, the majority of the electricians are members of JHL-the Trade Union for the Public and Welfare Sectors.

Union sources said that the work stoppage will begin at 7:00 am as the last minute attempt at the National Conciliator's office to find out an amicable solution to the dispute failed.
The meeting with the National Conciliator lasted for an hour.

The electricians did not accept the proposed model that was presented, said the Service Sector Employers PALTA.

According to PALTA's assessment, the dispute is not likely to be resolved through normal measures.

The VR Managing Director Ville Saksi allayed fears of rail traffic disruption pointing out that the lock out will not have a significant effect on the rail traffic.

According to Saksi, special provisions are in place to handle the situation. The thundery weather, according to Saksi, is a bigger threat to the rail traffic than the lockout.

Finnish Electrical Workers' Union has termed the lockout illegal.

According to the chair of the association, Petri VA Tamminen, previous labour dispute notifications had been cancelled and the employer has not been informed of the new dispute.
