The government has awarded half a million euros to efforts to assist terminated employees of STX Finland’s Rauma shipyard.
 
The Ministry of Employment and the Economy took reached the decision on Wednesday to allocate the sum to the Satakunta Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment to help the terminated axed workers.
 
“The allocated sum will allow for an efficient and swift support in re-employment of the terminated workers. The funding sought from the Globalisation Adjustment Fund is intended just for this kind of situation,” said Minister of Labour Lauri Ihalainen.
 
A statement from the ministry said the European Union Commission had received an application for the EU’s Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) for the STX Finland workers made redundant.
 
The application advocated for re-employment of the terminated workers, re-training and measures to promote entrepreneurship at a total cost of 2,265,000 euros 60 per cent of which is contribution by the EU.
 
The application lodged by the ministry covers redundancies in Satakunta and Southwest Finland.
 
The measures applied for include employment support to 565 terminated workers.
