Weather fluctuations in Finland have affected strawberry production this year resulting in a lower harvest, the producers said.

The harvesting ended last week.

“The winter was abnormal. So, the plant’s growth was hampered due to a lack of adequate cold. And rainfall and scorching heat ahead of the summer also hampered production,” said Mikko Kostamo, owner of Kemijoen Mansikka in Lapland.

Kostamo, who owns half a dozen strawberry fields on about seven acres of land by the Rovaniemi-Kuusamo road in Tennilä, about 45 kilometres from Rovaniemi, however, said, although the production was not satisfactory, the quality of the strawberry this year was quite okay.

He said the price of strawberries was also higher this year, which helped farmers manage the production costs.

Also, raw strawberries this season were infected by gray moulds due to the drought, which too put a negative impact on the production, said sources at the Fruits and Berry Farmers’ Union.
