Finnish dairy company Valio began on Monday export of lactose-free milk to Russia.

The exports are headed mainly to the Russian capital Moscow and St. Petersburg area.

Mika Koskinen, head of the company’s Russia and Eastern Markets, said Valio was preparing to send this week several truckloads of yoghurt, curd and sour cream products to Russia.

Following recent developments, Valio has moved from processing basic dairy products to lactose-free ones.

According to Koskinen, the technological process involved in processing of the products can take weeks.

“Some products such as milk can practically be done instantly,” said Koskinen.

Koskinen also revealed that the stock of lactose-free dairy products is enough for both the Finnish and the Russian markets.

The Finnish market is however given the priority in case there is a shortage.

Russia last week decided to permit the import of lactose-free dairy products.
