European Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister Lenita Toivakka is considering a domestic compensation for the dairy sector, if the EU does not compensate the country for the consequences of Russia’s counter-sanctions, according to the national broadcaster YLE.

However, Toivakka said she is confident that the EU will compensate the Finnish dairy sector following Russia’s ban on food and dairy products.

The EU last week reached a decision to compensate the dairy sector in hard-hit Baltic countries leaving out Finland.

Finland’s dairy sector statistics will be subject to revision in the EU this week, because due to cooperative structure, prices of products were not assessed adequately to be eligible for EU support.

If Finland gets the same compensation as accorded to the Baltic states, it would be less than one cent for a litre of milk.
