FTimes-STT Report, Dec 21

Blue-green algae or cyanobacteria can be so harnessed as to generate energy, said a University of Turku research report.

According to it, the energy produced can be used as fuel by hydrogen cars in the future.

Till now, blue-green algae have been considered mainly as harmful for bathing water.

Researchers are now trying to use the algae’s ability to produce hydrogen using light.

The researcher, Hannu Leino in his dissertation detailed the hydrogen-production capacity of pointed out about 400 cyanobacteria of the Calothrix genus which proved to be a promising hydrogen producer.

Blue-green algae are the only prokaryotic organisms that are able to photosynthesis.
