FTimes Report, Jan 15

The year-on-year change in consumer prices calculated by Statistics Finland was 0.5 per cent in December last. In November, it stood at 1.0 per cent, the data show.

The inflation slowed down particularly because prices of petrol and light fuel oil went down.

The average inflation rate in 2014 was 1.0 per cent.

In December, consumer prices were pushed up most from the previous year by risen rents, increase in the retail prices of tobacco products and cost in maintenance services of blocks of flats.

From November to December, consumer prices fell by 0.1 per cent, primarily due to decreases in the prices of liquid fuels.

Each mid-month, Statistics Finland's interviewers collect altogether around 50,000 prices on nearly 500 commodities from approximately 2,700 outlets for the Consumer Price Index.

In addition, some 1,000 items of price data are gathered by centralised collection, according the statistics.

According to preliminary data, inflation in the euro area in December was -0.2 per cent.

Eurostat’s estimate of inflation in the euro area is based on preliminary data from the member states and on the price development of energy.
