FTimes – STT Report, Jan 20

The estate overseeing the management of  the nickel mining company Talvivaara has proposed in its application for waste discharge pipe that fish caught nearby should in the future be marketed in the name of fish caught in different locations, reported the Finnish commercial broadcaster MTV.

According to the estate, this is to prevent the fishing industry from suffering.

MTV said the bankruptcy estate proposed in its application to the Regional State Administrative Agency that fish caught in the Nuasjärvi should broadly be marketed as fish from the Oulujärvi water body.

Fishermen interviewed by MTV are opposed to this, as they deem it contrary to the Food Act.

The proposed outgoing waste water discharge pipe would be about 18 kilometres in length and would end at the Nuasjärvi.

According to Kainuu ELY Centre, the pipe is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
