Retail chain Lidl plans to drop food prices as soon as Tuesday, reported national broadcaster YLE.

Lauri Sipponen, the Managing Director at Lidl Finland said the price decrease will cover hundreds of food products.

"There are fresh products, cold products and also dry range of products," Sipponen told YLE.

On Monday afternoon, Sipponen told news agency STT that price drop initiated by competitors S-Group and k-Group stores will be monitored.

He, however, at the time did not revealed more precisely what food products will be subject to the reduction.

According to Sipponen, the net income post the purchasing power in the country is very low, and public debate on food price has not come as a surprise.

Sipponen said the debate on the purchasing power and food prices was expected to rise during this election.
