Olkiluoto 2 nuclear power plant unit shut down on February 4 due to a water leakage from the water-cooled generator will take one more week to resume operations, said Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO).

The power unit is expected to resume operations on February 16, said sources.

The nuclear power plant unit was detached from the national grid on February 4 after water leakage was detected.

According to TVO, the fault was probably caused by the generator’s rotor which will be replaced.

“The actual source of leakage was not found, but the probable reason of the fault is the rotor. As a consequence, it was decided to replace the rotor,” said Pasi Tuohimaa, head of communications at TVO.

Tuohimaa said the rotor weighs 90 tonnes and its replacement is expected to take a week.

According to TVO, Olkiluoto 1 nuclear power plant is operating normally.

The electricity produced by Olkiluoto 2 corresponds on average to just less than 10 per cent of the country’s electricity consumption.
