Retail giant Stockmann on Friday announced that it is considering closing down its departmental store in Oulu.

In a release, Stockmann said the current lease agreement expires in 2017 and, as a consequence, co-determination negotiations now affect all employees at the store.

Stockmann said it was launching an efficiency programme with an annual cost-saving target of 50 million euros in order to turn its revenue performance around.

The Oulu store currently employs approximately 230 people, of whom around 90 are full-time, revealed Stockmann.

The news of closure created frustration and disappointment among the customers.

“It is disappointing; I am used to visiting the store on a weekly basis. This is an easy place for me (to shop) since I am a person who works at the city centre,” said Kari-Pekka Rytilahti who was holding shopping bags in both hands.

According to Rytilahti, the departmental store had enhanced Oulu’s recognisability.

Helky Kellokoski, another Stockmann’s customer, said it will be very disappointing, if the department store shuts its door. Kellokoski praised the departmental store for its wide range of products and services.

Anne-Maria Takkula, another customer who was standing in the queue, said the news of the imminent closure came as a surprise.
