The Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK) is still considering whether to negotiate for an additional year for its employment and growth contract.

The chairman of the board, Matti Alahuhta, told YLE’s Ykkösaamu (Morning Breakfast programme) on Saturday that the union was still digesting the failure of the negotiations to prevent strikes.

The employees’ representatives ended negotiations on February 16, because they did not believe the EK’s requirements to be realistic.

“We are now weighing and considering what is the best path to take next,” Alahuhta said.

The employment and growth contract was signed in the autumn of 2013. The parties also agreed that they would evaluate the effectiveness of the negotiation system, for example, in preventing strikes.

Alahuhta believes the failure of the negotiations reflect the difficulty in moving past long-held traditions.

The employment and growth contract extension to the end of next year should be decided by the June 15 deadline.
