The European Commission plans to extend support to those pork producers who have been affected by the Russian counter sanctions.

Minister of Agriculture Petteri Orpo said the aid is related to private storage aid of pork meat.

Orpo said the opening of the aid has been confirmed by European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan.

The minister, however, did not specify any timeframe for getting the aid but hoped that it would be received soon.

The commission’s plan is to offer pork companies an emergency aid so that they can be able to store more pork than what they usually manage.

But details of the aid package is not yet clear.

The embargo on food and dairy products from Western countries imposed on Russia a year ago has resulted in oversupply of pork globally.

This, according to Orpo, has resulted in a drop in pork price not only in Central Europe but in the country as well.
