The melting of snow in spring will cause problems for the nickel mining company Talvivaara, said the bankruptcy estate managing Talvivaara subsidiary Sotkamo.

According to the estate’s estimates, this year’s discharge quota will be full early April, thus not making it possible to siphon out melting water from the mine areas.

The estate wants to build a 20-kilometre-long discharge pipe from the mining areas to Nuasjärvi.

The pipe will ease the discharge burden and improve water management in the mining areas.

The company has stressed in its defence that its water storage capacity is not up to the task until the completion of the discharge pipe.

The Northern Finland Regional Administrative Agency was on Tuesday conducting a review of the envisaged discharge pipe by the Sotakamo subsidiary.

According to news agency STT journalist at the site, around a hundred people were following the proceedings of the review being conducted at Vuokatti Sports, a versatile sports resort.

The regional administrative agency has received several reminders and comments from the public, with the vast majority opposed to the construction of the discharge pipe.

Despite the protests, the bankruptcy estate has applied for a construction permit.
