Sales of retail trade decreased by 2.9 per cent in January from the same period a year before, according to Statistics Finland’s retail trade flash estimate.

Over the same period, the volume of retail trade sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, went down by 2.1 per cent.

In daily consumer goods trade, sales contracted by 2.0 per cent and the sales volume by 1.5 per cent in January from the corresponding period of the previous year.

In both retail trade and daily consumer goods trade, turnover went down more strongly than the sales volume, because prices also fell in both industries from the previous year’s January.

There were 25 weekday trading days in January 2015, which is the same as in January 2014. Weekday trading days refer to the weekdays of a calendar month (Monday to Saturday) excluding mid-week holidays.

Daily consumer goods accounted for 48.3 per cent of turnover in retail trade in 2013, according to the Structural business and financial statement statistics.

The retail trade flash estimate is based on a sample covering, on the average, 60 per cent of retail trade turnover.

Data on trade sales by industry will next be released on 12 March 2015.
