The Deputy Parliamentary Ombudsman Maija Sakslin has asked the Customs and the Ministry of Finance for clarification regarding tax refund on imported cars.

The tax refund is related to the taxation levied on used imported cars.

Sakslin wants the Customs and the Ministry of Finance to explain what measures have been taken to change the taxation, tax refunds as well as to provide update on the legal procedure in relation to the matter.

The complain received by the Ombudsman is aimed at determining whether the Finnish car taxation is contrary to the EU anti-discrimination policy

A regulation which came into force in 2008 defined taxation to be levied on imported used cars on different grounds to the cars used in the country.

Following the regulation, the European Commission took a legal action against the country due to levying of a tax similar to value added tax.

Sakslin pointed out that non-discrimination policy should have been taken into account following the decision by the European Court of Justice in 2013, and authorities should start to remedy the situation.

According to national broadcaster YLE, approximately 12,000 applications for tax readjustments on imported cars have been submitted to the Customs.

According to the Customs, the processing time of the applications could take up to a year.
