Ice breakers crew have threatened to go on strike today at exactly 2:00 pm if their demands are not met by the deadline given.

The Sailors' Union, the Finnish Ships' Officers' Association-SLPL and Finnish Engineers' Association-SKL have issued a double strike threat. However, strike threat related to contract negotiations has been moved to Sunday.

The dispute on the table concerns oil spill prevention work as well as the general work force involved in the operations, revealed Simo Zitting, chair of the Sailors' Union.

Zitting said that the European Maritime Safety Agency had signed agreement with Arctia Shipping which underlined that one icebreaker should continuously be used in oil spill response throughout the year.

It was agreed that the crew will be paid special compensation, but the dispute is related to compensation to be paid, said Zitting.

The negotiations were set to continue under the watch of National Conciliator Minne Helle late on Wednesday evening and if necessary until Thursday morning.

The possible strike on Thursday will involve no less than ten Arctia Shipping vessels, ice breaker, multipurpose ice breakers and tugboats, revealed Zitting.
