Total trade sales in January 2015 went down by 8.8 per cent compared to that in January of the previous year, according to Statistics Finland’ data.
The fall was particularly caused by the development in wholesale trade and motor vehicle trade.
Wholesale trade sales declined by 12.0 per cent and motor vehicle sales by 11.3 per cent in January corresponding to the same month of the previous year.
In turn, retail trade sales fell by 2.2 per cent from one year ago. In daily consumer goods trade, sales contracted by 1.4 per cent and in department store trade by 1.3 per cent from one year ago.
In retail trade, the sales volume decreased by 1.3 per cent and in wholesale trade by 8.7 per cent from January 2014. In turn, the sales volume in motor vehicle trade contracted by 11.4 per cent from the previous year, the data show.
The fall was affected by decreased sales of new motor vehicles, as the data indicate that the number of first registrations of motor vehicles was also 23.1 per cent lower this January than in January 2014.
The volume of total sales was 6.6 per cent lower in January than in the year before.
