FTimes – STT Report, Mar 25

The ongoing icebreakers’ strike is likely to extend to international maritime cargo vessels.

The crew from the sailors’ union and the Finnish Engineers’ Association-SKL have threatened to go on strike on Maundy Thursday, confirmed the respective unions.

The strike will also apply to passenger ships carrying cargo. However, the strike will not concern passenger cruise ships if the car deck is loaded with only personal cars and buses.

The two unions have been engaged in contract negotiations for over two months. According to the employees, the reason for the strike is related to the binding terms in the collective bargaining agreement and undermined working conditions spearheaded by Arctia Shipping.

The icebreakers’ crew went on strike on March 12.
