A 16 MW icebreaker built for Russia was launched on Wednesday at the Artech Helsinki Shipyard.

The vessel being built belongs to the series of three new vessels ordered by the Russian Ministry of Transport from Vyborg Shipyard, a statement from the Arctech Helsinki Shipyard said.

The icebreaker was named by the vessel’s godmother, Marina Vasilyevna Kovtun, the governor of the Murmansk Region.

“Icebreaker Murmansk, which was launched today, is of an icebreaker type in the Russian icebreaker renewal programme intended both for the Baltic Sea as well as Arctic conditions.

The vessel will be delivered later this year. The vessel is built in co-operation with Vyborg Shipyard,” said Arctech Helsinki Shipyard Managing Director Esko Mustamäki in a statement.

The basic design and purchasing of major components will be provided by Vyborg Shipyard as well as 40 per cent of the vessel’s hull blocks.

The Helsinki Shipyard will be responsible for the construction, outfitting and commissioning of the vessel.

The vessel is able to operate in temperatures as cold as -40 degrees Celsius and the maximum icebreaking capability is 1.5m.

Currently Artech is building six icebreaking vessels. The Murmansk Icebreaker is due to be delivered in autumn 2015. The second vessel, the world’s first LNG-powered icebreaker for the Finnish Transport Agency, will be delivered by the beginning of 2016.
