Companies, whether established or starting up, are waking up to the full potentials of Internet of Things (IoT), with their need for quality devices and solutions being at the top of agendas.

ThingSee, an Oulu-based start-up venture from Haltian which started off as a real-time shipping project, is already being hailed as the northern star of IoT, despite being still at the early stages of business.

Currently focused on development of quality devices and IoT solutions, ThingSee aims to widen the scope of possibilities for developers, especially when it comes to access.

“We started to think about how we could make all this easier for the developers themselves, and came up with ThingsSee One,” said Ville Ylläsjärvi, the founder of ThingsSee.

Its launch product ThingSee One is a sensor-packed development platform for IoT development companies that provide a power savvy package which is also easy to use.

“What we’re talking about is a totally new way to develop an IoT product with less initial investment,” he added.

Another project is the SeeMORE concept developed by the Oulu-based Lewel. The SeeMORE concept is a customer-tailored solution for industrial applications and is based on the existing technology. It provides IoT solutions for industrial needs, either as part of the existing machine control or as an independent network.

According to Jukka Kangas, the CEO of Lewel Group, only a limited number of applications know what kind of IoT solutions are needed or what kind of value they can bring to the existing business processes. However, one way to overcome this challenge is through creating a pilot project which demonstrates to the client the benefits of the solution.

“With our SeeMORE concept, we can speed up the development process from concept to field-testing while maintaining the reliability of the solution,” said Kangas.

The use of the existing technologies as seen in the SeeMORE concept as well by ThingSee has been a welcome relief for clients.

“We use existing tech, depending on the application needed, which helps us optimise the power consumption,” explained Kangas.

This “technological maturity” is similarly reflected in the work of ThingsSee. “ThingSee One uses 2G radio technology, allowing it to work in practically everywhere, while allowing it to stay online up to a year without external power supply,” pointed out Ylläsjärvi.

The potential for growth in IoT is picking, as exemplified by recent involvement of Lewel Group in building Ouman’s IoT networks. This project is aimed at helping Ouman create more energy-efficient projects and improving their automation solutions. As for the budding ThingSee, it is banking on the growth potential in the market.
