FTimes – STT Report, April 22

Hundreds of companies charge high rates for customer care calls contrary to the law, reported the Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat.

According to a law which came into force less than a year ago, a company may charge 8.8 cents per minute or as by the subscription contract.

According to the report, a customer, for instance, calling to cancel an order or reclaim a defective product may have to pay up to 10 times more.

The Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority told the paper that they have made attempts to inform the companies about the change in law. According to the authority, some of the companies have been carrying out these operations purely out of ignorance and partly due to disregard.

In some cases, the primary customer care number is hidden at the bottom of the website while the chargeable call number is imposed.

According to the report, the chargeable number on the website of the national railway operator VR Group is listed first. The number which is at the bottom of the list is cheap and can be used to make cancellations.

The practice by VR is not against the law, but was given as an example where the customer number appears.
