Mon, 04 May, 2015 12:04:58 AM FTimes – STT Report, May 4  File Photo – Lehtikuva. Almost one fifth of the superfood products examined by the Finnish Customs are not fit to be sold in the country, reported the provincial newspaper Sunnuntaisuomalainen.
In the period 2011-2014, the customs laboratory examined 93 batches of imported superfood.
Of the examined imports, 17 were in breach of the provisions.
According to the newspaper, the most common reasons for rejecting the products include inadequate labelling as well as products revealing pesticide residues and other contaminants.
Signs of pesticide residues were found, among other products, in goji berries which are one the most popular marketed superfoods in the country.
The health effects of superfood products do not have an official definition; however, the health claims attached to the products should be justified to the consumer.
According to nutrition expert Hanna Skyttä, the labelling on superfood products can generally be trusted.
However, Skyttä warns consumers to approach cheaper products with caution, but at the same time it does not mean it is not the case with cheaper products.
