The National Bureau of Investigation-NBI is investigating bribery related to sponsoring of sporting events, reported the Finnish commercial broadcaster MTV.

According to MTV news, among the suspects are three former directors of the construction company Skanska.

The police suspect that part of the funding given to sponsor equestrian sporting events was bribery money.

A former real estate director of Helsinki Cooperative Society Elanto (HOK-Elanto) is suspected of taking bribes, reported MTV. The daughters of the former director of the cooperative have been in many equestrian teams sponsored by Finnish companies.

The companies have been supporting the teams over the years, spending hundreds of thousands of euros.

The police are interested to know whether the sponsoring agreements had influence on the contracts between HOK-Elanto and the companies involved.

According to MTV, all the suspects have denied the allegations.

The NBI confirmed the launch of preliminary investigations but refused to divulge the details.
