Finnish enterprises had business activity in 4,773 affiliates located in 125 countries in 2013, according to Statistics Finland's data. 
 
Measured by the number of personnel, the activity of affiliates abroad concentrated in Europe and Asia.
 
The personnel abroad totalled nearly 528,000, of whom nearly one-third were working in 15 EU countries, nearly one-quarter in Asia and Oceania, and almost one-sixth in 28 countries under the EU.
 
Examined by country, the numbers of personnel were the highest in Sweden, China, Russia and India as per the data collected from the enterprises.
 
Finnish affiliates employed the largest numbers of persons in 15 EU countries, altogether nearly 163,600 persons.
 
In the 15 EU countries, the largest industries by the number of personnel were the machinery and metal products industry where 34,060 persons were employed, and the paper industry where 24,530 persons were employed, the statistics show.
 
Measured by the number of personnel, Finnish affiliates' personnel was the second biggest in Asia and Oceania, numbering good 123,740.
 
The industries with the highest numbers of personnel in Asia and Oceania were the electrical and electronics industry where 54,770 persons were employed, and the machinery and metal products industry were 36,160 persons were employed.  
 
Of individual countries, the numbers of personnel in affiliates were the highest in Sweden (65,380 persons), China (58,620 persons), Russia (46,320 persons) and India (37,600 persons).
 
The manufacturing industry was the most significant employer in Finnish affiliates abroad. The numbers of personnel were the highest in affiliates of the electrical and electronics industry (115,290 persons), and the machinery and metal products industry (109,010 persons).
 
Investments by affiliates abroad into their tangible goods amounted to nearly euro 4.6 billion of which 76 per cent of the investments were made in Europe and 15 per cent in Asia and Oceania.
 
In Europe, the investments focused on manufacturing industries and totalled good euro 1.2 billion.
 
In the EU countries, the largest investments were made by the paper industry (euro 365 million) and in European countries outside the EU by electricity, gas and water supply (euro 517 million).
 
In Asia and Oceania, investments concentrated in the electrical and electronics industry (euro 400 million) and the machinery and metal products industry (euro 104 million). 
 
Among individual countries, the maximum euro 920.7 million was invested in Russia.
 
Examined world-wide, affiliates in the manufacturing industry invested the largest total amount of euro 2.2 million.
 
The combined total turnover of Finnish affiliates located abroad amounted to almost euro 148.3 billion.
