The number of voluntary employer-provided health insurance has nearly doubled in five years.

Currently, nearly 180,000 Finns have health insurance coverage provided by the employer, reported a Finnish language daily, the Savon Sanomat.

The employer-provided insurance makes the possibility of getting the employee back to work sooner after a sick leave.

The sick leave could be shortened when, for example, an employee gets a private surgery and does not need to wait on the public queue.

The absence of employees is expensive for the employers, said Sari Seppi-Laitinen, a service director at the financial institution Lähi Tapiola.

Juhana Valve, the chief underwriter at Pohjola, believes the increase in popularity of the scheme is partly due to the fact that supply of the services has improved.

Health insurance covered by the employer is a new phenomenon in the country.
