Nordea Bank board of directors on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of 54-year-old Casper von Koskull from Finland as the group’s new president.

Von Koskull will take over from Christian Clausen of Denmark who will be stepping down on November 1.

Von Koskull’s professed goal is to take Nordea forward while continuing in the footsteps of his predecessor.

“The banking sector is in transition due to, among other things, regulation, digitilisation and change in customer conduct. We have worked in close cooperation with Clausen, and we have made a long-term strategy for the future. The journey continues unchanged since I share the same views as my predecessor,” von Koskull told the news agency STT.

According to previous media reports, the chair of Nordea board of directors, Björn Wahlroos is said to have been dissatisfied with the outgoing president Clausen.

However, Wahlroos denied the media reports in a piece run by the Helsingin Sanomat, a Finnish language daily.

According to Wahlroos, von Koskull was chosen because he has managed to strengthen Nordea as a large corporate bank.

Von Koskull, too, does not concur with the earlier media reports.

“My predecessor has taken the bank in a better direction. This is more of a natural change when the strategy is reformed radically, also the leadership changes,” he said.
