Engineering company Sandvik announced on Tuesday the continuation of its operations in Turku.

In June Sandvik said it was planning to close down its site in Turku and in turn optimise the site. At that time, the production at the Turku site was estimated to end in the second quarter of 2016.

The company in a release said that it had taken the decision after further investigation of the competitive landscape, the current market situation and risks involved.

According to Sandvik, it had decided to maintain the activities and deliveries from the Turku plant due to the need to ensure a long-term commitment towards their customers, and maintaining strong market position in key areas for the company.

“We deeply apologize for the inconveniences that this may have caused for the employees concerned and others affected by the previous decision. The complete supply chain process is complex and the impact of changes can be difficult to foresee,” said Scot Smith, the President of Sandvik Mining in the release.

The impact of the decision will now be evaluated in the perspective of the supply chain optimization program as a whole, said Sandvik.
