Metalworkers’ Union Chairman Riku Aalto said on Saturday that his union does not agree with the government’s proposed holiday bonus cuts or any other measures that would cut wages.
“What is the point of collective agreements, then, if our country’s government and parliament begin to meddle with our working conditions,” Aalto asked while talking to YLE in its Ykkösaamu (Morning breakfast) programme.
Aalto’s union believes that holiday bonuses should be considered part of one’s salary.
According to Aalto, it is more acceptable to everyone to find a compromise during the labour market negotiations currently in progress.
He also believes it is unclear whether the government’s proposed mandatory law meets international commitments or is legal under Finland’s constitution.
If the government’s budget cuts progress, Aalto believes they will seek compensation in next autumn’s negotiations.
Local bargaining, on the other hand, is not a problem for the Metalworkers’ Union. According to Aalto, wage negotiations in the workplace happen all over the world.
Aalto said his own salary and company car benefits are in the 10,000 euro range.
Aalto also mentioned that he is not trying to be chairman of the new central union organisation. He said he was happy to continue as chairman of the Metalworkers’ Union.
