Over a third of municipalities have reduced funding used for youth work, according to a survey conducted by the Finnish Youth Co-operation-Allianssi and the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities.

Furthermore, 40 per cent of the respondents believe the funding will decrease in the next five years.

The financial situation of the state and municipalities are behind the cuts.

“The personnel in youth work in the last five years have grown in over half of the municipalities which responded and the youth have received the support they need,” said Allianssi President Eero Rämö.

Now the government is trimming funding for youth outreach work, while preventive youth work is faced with pressure of cuts in many municipalities, said Rämö.

The survey conducted for the sixth time interviewed 191 representatives of youth services representing 63 per cent of Finnish municipalities.
