Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Tuesday said the earnings-related unemployment benefits will be shortened by 100 days except for persons who have attained the age of 58.

The announcement comes after the government decided to shorten the duration of the unemployment benefits. The duration of earnings-related unemployment benefit for people with less than three years of working history will be cut from 400 days to 300 days.

The overall duration of earnings-related unemployment benefit is to be shortened from 500 days to 400 days.

According to Sipilä, the reform does not interfere with the level of the support.

"The main policy is unanimous, the details on this issue will be finalised and announced possibly tomorrow (Wednesday), " he said.

The Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy dealt with the unemployment benefits on Tuesday morning.

The premier, however, did not clarify whether the government through this model will meet its target of making euro 200 million in savings. Sipilä said the issue will also be clarified on Wednesday.

Further reforms on unemployment benefit also includes extension of waiting period from five to seven days.

The reform has been prepared by an informal working group which has also seen the representation of labour market groups.

The government draft is scheduled to be completed next spring and reform is expected to be implemented at the beginning of 2017.
