The leader of the main opposition party in parliament Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland), Antti Rinne said on Tuesday said that his party would not accept the government move to cut the unemployment benefits.

"I do not believe that this has any relevance from the reemployment point of view," Rinne told the Parliament.

According to Rinne, the cuts will lead to unforeseeable consequences for municipalities’ social assistance expenditure.

Rinne said the income of the municipalities will be hit when people apply for social assistance 100 days earlier.

The SDP leader believes the measure would not promote reemployment and should have been avoided.

The proposal, according to Rinne, should be of no benefit to the cooperation efforts between the government as well as the labour market organisations when the labour market organisations are currently expected to bring forth their proposal on improving competitiveness.

"This will for sure not improve that cooperation," Rinne said.
