The leakage from the Kittilä gold mine pond which occurred in the middle of September was brought under control after 36, hours, said Agnico Eagle Finland, the company which runs the gold mine on Tuesday.

The pond leaked 350 cubic meters of water per hour. The company said moraine was driven at the bottom of the pond and the leak was plugged.

According to the company, about 30 percent more water leaked to the environment than otherwise would have been calculated.

According to a release from the company, the leakage did not affect the quality of water in the nearby river, Seurujoki.

The company's managing director Ingmar Haga said the stability of the dam structures was not threatened by the spillage.

The company has asked for permission to pump excess purified water from the pond for a five-week period from the end of October to the end of November after which dam repair work will be launched.
