The Ministry of Employment and Economy plans to seek more budget allocations for language education of the immigrant people next year, following the huge influx of refugees this year.
The ministry, which is also responsible for integration of immigrants in the society, will draw up a proposal sensing that about 10,000-12,000 refugees will seek resident permits.
“Those refugees who have already entered Finland will receive their decisions next year. The pressures are high and there is a real need,” said Kristina Stenman, director at the ministry who deals with immigration-related issues.
The additional money will be sought next year in a supplementary budget. If it’s approved, the government and parliament will consider it again next November, said the director.

“There is a talk of a significant amount,” the director said.
Right now, there is about 60 million euros in funding for adult integration training, which includes language and cultural study.
The Red Cross, which is responsible for about 80 refugee reception centres, has no comment on whether the ministry’s numbers are accurate or too low.
“The numbers come entirely from the ministry; we’re just focusing on our work and working with them,” said Red Cross Communications Manager Ilpo Kiiskinen.
