The postal strike expanded on Tuesday as the Finnish Aviation Union-IAU and the Finnish Seafar-ers’ Union lent their support to the striking postal workers.

Starting from next Monday at 6am, the Seafarers’ Union members will not pick postal and logistics group units aboard cargo or passenger ships, ferries or any other means of transport or cargo carrying vessel.

On the other hand, IAU announced support measures targeting the handling of outgoing postal mail next Monday and Tuesday as well as the supply of food rations to different mailing flights.

The disputing parties, the Post and Logistics Union (PAU) and the Service Sector Employers’ As-sociation (Palta) again met with the National Conciliator Minna Helle on Tuesday, but still no deci-sive progress was made.

The negotiations are scheduled to continue on Thursday.

PAU's chair Heidi Nieminen believes the support from other trade unions will have an effect on the negotiations. Nieminen said there was no point of asking for support if they would not have an im-pact.

Tuomas Aarto, Palta Deputy Director, termed the support measures regrettable and said, “These support measures which keep coming all the time do not at all improve the negotiation environment which is already fairly challenging”.
