YLE tax is being phased out from the beginning of next year for hundreds of thousands of low-income citizens.

The Finance Committee supports the government’s proposal which would relieve about 300,000 people from paying the national public broadcaster tax.

In practice, the tax is being phased out for 120,000 pensioners. Those exempt from the tax include all earnings-related pensioners and public pensioners.

According to the proposal, the minimum amount charged for the tax would rise from 51 euros to 70 euros.

Also, the income limits will rise. The wage and salaried employees’ income threshold, from which the tax is calculated, would rise from the current 8,120 euros per year to 10,914 euros, and the threshold for pensioners and recipients of public benefits would rise from 7,500 euros to 10,294.

The decision to exempt the YLE taxes is based on index-adjusted allocations done for next year.

The law will be put into practice in 2016.
