The chair of the main opposition Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP), Antti Rinne on Wednesday urged the labour market groups to get back to the negotiating table.

Rinne warned of prolonged labour market crisis, if the issue is not resolved now.

According to the SDP chief, the nation needs long-term and moderate wage solutions which would create a stable outlook for companies and employees.

Rinne said the first and most important step towards finding a solution would be for the government to give up its proposed coercive legislative package on wage cuts.

Similarly, the chair of the Vihreä liitto (Green League) parliamentary group, Outi Alanko-Kahiluoto tweeted that the government should try to get the negotiators back to the table. Alanko-Kahiluoto pointed out that the government’s coercive laws affect most women with low income.

The chair of Vasemmistoliitto (Left Alliance), Paavo Arhinmäki also spoke against the forced legislative measures aimed at boosting competitiveness.

“When we cut the wages of low- and middle-income earners, the purchasing power weakens and thus leads to higher unemployment. According to the finance ministry’s own estimate, the short-term coercive laws undermine the economic growth and increase unemployment,” Arhinmäki said in a statement.
